Height Safety
Maintenance & Support | May 21, 2021
The crushing and screening industry demands employees to work at higher platforms. Using the right kind of access equipment is extremely crucial for the safety of the employees.
People or objects falling and causing serious injury is the main concern while working at a height.
Access equipment not only helps in the vertical mobility of workers but also in the safety of workers at work sites.
Points to remember while working at height
- Ensure area below is cordoned off
- Suitable and well maintained equipment should be used for the job
- Safety awareness for workers
- Control measures should be in place to ensure safety.
Ladders should ideally be used only for shorter work duration. Erecting the ladder at the correct angle and keeping it close to work to avoid over reaching is the right way of using ladders. The base of the ladder should be protected to ensure vehicles or pedestrians don’t bump into it.
While using stepladders, it is good to double check if they are spread to full extent and locked. Only one person should be on the stepladder at one time.
While using mobile elevated platforms, the worker should be instructed to work only with a trained operator at the ground level. It is good to use the equipment with outriggers and stabilisers. It must always be ensured that the platform is kept within safe working limits, considering the wind speeds, power cables and projections like beams and hanging obstructions. The scaffolding used must be inspected by competent persons periodically.
Maintaining a record and using an effective tagging system will ensure height safety. Inspections at regular intervals will ensure safety of workers. It is a must, after bad weather conditions and after some modifications are done.
All safety equipment should only be erected, used and inspected by trained personnel.
